Security purchased at the cost of growth becomes its own prison. The Four of Pentacles depicts the natural impulse to protect what we've gathered—the savings, the position, the identity we've built. But the figure's posture suggests rigidity; the city behind him indicates that life continues while he guards his coins. There is wisdom in stewardship, but hoarding stems from fear, not wisdom.
